Mixed-Ages

For children newborn to 5 years.

This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age four, and through all nine song collections. Child development researchers recommend mixed-age groupings because they foster natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own developmental level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and relaxed, offering new ways to play musically at home, or anywhere. The whole family is welcome to join in this important family music experience and any caregiver—parent, grandparent, nanny—can bring the child(ren) to class.

Musical Parenting Class

For infants newborn to 8 months, as an introduction to Music Together.

Every child's development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies ages eight months and younger. Babies are always welcome to attend a mixed-age class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Parents with infants may also register for the special Musical Parenting Class which is offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together, after which babies would normally attend mixed-age classes.

In the Musical Parenting class your teacher will lead you through a variety of activities, facilitating fun and creative ways for you to interact musically with your baby, offering a wealth of parent education around infant music development. Because the babies are non-mobile, there is a calmer energy in this class, allowing the teacher more opportunities to explain the ‘whys’ behind the ‘whats’ and to point out emerging musical behaviours.

Rhythm Kids II

Rhythm Kids Level 2 offers children kindergarten through second grade the opportunity to develop their music skills in a class that is lively, fun, and developmentally appropriate. A very special focus of the program is learning hand drumming, in addition to singing and other movement skills. Music-reading readiness activities are also included. This is being offered as a parent-child class. Children will need a drum for at-home play and practice.

Rhythm Kids I

Rhythm kids I is for children 4 and 5 years old. Each week we drum, sing, dance, play rhythm instruments, and begin to play music-based games. Rhythm Kids guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative. Rhythm Kids I is intended as a parent-child class, but drop-off is optional, pending teacher approval.
